Maths: Embedding digital technologies in teaching and learning

Providing a deeper dive into how digital technologies can be used to transform teaching and learning of mathematics. Teachers will explore resources, tools and proven pedagogies that leverage digital media and technology to help students reach deeper levels of maths understanding, problem solving and real world application. Examples will feature Discovery Education Espresso along with freely available web resources. There will be opportunities for exploration and reflection, ensuring possibilities for immediate application in every classroom.

Duration options: 3 hours or 6 hours

6 hour course

Goals:

  • To provide a deeper dive into how digital technologies can be used to transform teaching and learning of mathematics
  • To explore resources, tools and proven pedagogies that leverage digital media and technology to help students reach deeper levels of maths understanding
  • To familiarise participants with Discovery Education Espresso's resources for maths as well as a variety of freely available web 2.0 tools
  • To support the integration of digital media into medium and short term planning of maths

Outcomes:

  • An understanding of the support and engagement digital technologies can provide in all areas of maths
  • An awareness of the variety of ways digital technologies can be used and their impact in transforming teaching and learning in maths
  • An awareness of the range of resources in Discovery Education Espresso and how they can be used to meet the requirements of the maths curriculum
  • Confidence to incorporate digital media into short and medium term planning in maths

Whole staff; Key stage grouping; phase grouping; year grouping; NQTs; middle management; Teaching assistants/support staff

3 hour course

Goals:

  • To look at how using different strategies with digital media can support the skills needed to become skilled mathematicians
  • To familiarise participants with Discovery Education Espresso's maths resources and how to incorporate these with a freely available web 2.0 tool

Outcomes:

  • An understanding of the impact using digital media with a variety of instructional strategies can have on developing students numeracy skills 
  • An awareness of the range of resources in Discovery Education Espresso and how these can be used to meet the requirements of the maths curriculum
