What they don’t teach you in training

Whatever your route into teaching, there are some things they just didn’t teach you and you weren’t in any school long enough to pick them up via osmosis. Teacher training courses tell you how to teach, but there is a whole other set of rules (and guidance) which will not only help you to reach your full potential as a teacher, but also help you to avoid the pitfalls which you don’t even realise exist until you’re knee-deep in them. Experienced teacher, Omar Akbar, considers strategies and tips to help you thrive in teaching.

Efficient time management and organisational skills

Andrew Hammond talks to experienced teacher, author and trainer, Andrew Jeffrey, about the relationship we all have with that most prized commodity: time. How can we use it efficiently? How can we move from being reactive to pro-active? Andrew shares some thoughts from his thirty-year career in teaching and leadership.

Each of us has exactly 24 hours in our day. What’s more, this will never change. How we spend them is supremely important, yet how often do we ever stop to think deeply about how we might best do so? In this fireside chat, Andrew Jeffrey shares some strategies to help us remain well-organised, efficient and with a positive mindset, whatever is thrown at us. Planning carefully may only motivate some of us, but a lack of planning can quickly demotivate all of us.

As we enter the summer break, and then think about the new academic year ahead, we consider some of the routines and rituals that may help us to stay on top and stay positive.

Building parent partnership

Andrew Hammond talks to experienced senior leader, educational consultant and Pathway author, Julie Keyes, about the challenges and the benefits of building effective partnerships with parents and carers.

In this fireside chat, we consider the importance of the relationship between teacher and parent. Julie Keyes shares some tried and test strategies to strengthen and grow this partnership, including: how to enter parent meetings feeling empowered and confident; how to build trust and rapport; how to give honest and professional feedback when challenging situations arise. The session will be focused on how, as leaders, we can support and empower our less experienced staff to feel confident in this important area of a teacher’s role.
