Discovery Education’s Summer Coder Challenge 2024: Winners Announced

Global edtech leader Discovery Education today announced the winners of the 2024 Summer Coder Challenge, a popular computer programming competition for schools across the UK.

The challenge invites children to showcase their coding skills by creating a fun app or computer game using Discovery Education Coding, the award-winning resource for primary schools.

Judges were highly impressed by the wide range of entries and the programming skills shown by pupils. With entries that included explorations of outer space and racing car games, the judges remarked that this year’s field was “impressive, realistic and of a very high standard.”

The Discovery Education Summer Coder Challenge 2024 winners are:

10 year old Wilf from Wansdyke Primary School in Devizes, Wiltshire who designed an exciting racing car game using block coding.

10 year old Anna from Lee Chapel Primary School in Basildon, Essex who created an innovative alien space race game.

Both Wilf and Anna are now the proud owners of a Botley Coding Robot and have won a year’s free subscription to Discovery Education Coding for their school.

Anna said, “Coding and computing have always been one of my favourite lessons and when I was chosen as the winner of this year’s competition, I was so happy and overjoyed! It felt amazing to win for the school and look forward to entering next year’s competition again!”

Ben Marck, Anna’s teacher, said, “I am so proud of Anna’s success in computing this year and to win this year’s Discovery Education Summer Coding competition is a huge achievement! Her determination and willingness to learn new skills has enabled her to make leaps and bounds in computing. Coding is an essential part of the computing subject and opens the doors to many exciting career opportunities. Discovery Education has provided some really excellent resources to break the process of learning coding skills into engaging and manageable chunks which our students have thoroughly enjoyed working through.”

Wilf said, “I really like using the Discovery Education Coding website and I felt proud to win!”

Jennifer Murray, Wilf’s teacher, said,

“Wilf’s entry really showcased his coding knowledge and passion. As a school, we were so impressed with his game and are delighted for Wilf that his creativity and hard work is being celebrated in this competition. Block coding has been fantastic for showing the students how their favourite technology is created and having a go for themselves. We hope it inspires more future coders, just like Wilf.”

Taking coding from concept to reality, Discovery Education Coding helps children to master computer programming in a fun and accessible way, giving them the freedom to create apps and games using their imagination. Through activities like exploring outer space and the mysteries of Ancient Egypt, to deep-sea diving and racing car driving, pupils can enjoy coding while gaining a deep understanding of concepts like algorithms, sequences and variables.
