A north London primary school has embarked on a new initiative to help teachers prepare pupils for tomorrow’s digital challenges.

Brentfield Primary School in Brent has entered into a professional development partnership with Discovery Education, one of the UK’s leading providers of digital content to schools.

The 3 year programme will see staff trained as ‘digital champions’, and receive ongoing support to increase their confidence and skills in using technology in the classroom. Created around specific school needs, and recognising Brentfield’s high percentage of pupils with English as an additional language, the partnership also provides the school with cutting-edge digital resources, helping teachers to meet the learning needs of each individual child.

Julie Harvey, Deputy Head of Brentfield Primary School said:

“Children have different styles of learning, and technology helps us to reach out to every child. Discovery Education enables our teachers to pinpoint appropriate resources really quickly and the professional development partnership is absolutely tailored to our school’s needs. Our staff have already benefited from the excellent training, and I’m pleased that by using our own digital champions we are building capacity and expertise within the school.”

Paola Riddle, Head teacher at Brentfield Primary School said:

“Discovery Education’s programme is contributing enormously to the professional development of our teachers and teaching assistants, helping us to achieve our goal of inspiring pupils and empowering staff to use technology across the curriculum.”

The long term partnership will see Discovery Education work alongside Brentfield Primary on a range of digital projects, including building curriculum leadership, developing coding expertise and introducing tablet devices into the classroom. Brentfield pupils, meanwhile, will see their everyday lessons transformed by the award-winning, interactive digital resources in Discovery Education Espresso and Discovery Education Coding.

By working in partnership with Discovery Education, all teachers at Brentfield will also be supported by the Discovery Education Community. A network of education professionals who are passionate about transforming the learning experience with digital media, the Community connects members around the world through social media, virtual conferences and in-person events.

“We’re honoured and excited to be partnering with the inspiring teachers at Brentfield. We look forward to empowering and supporting staff and their students to become agile, digital leaders,“ said Catherine Howard, Director of Professional Development at Discovery Education. “Through this partnership Brentfield will be building even greater digital confidence and capacity in their teachers, who will also benefit from being members of the Discovery Education Community.”
