Communicate effectively with parents.

Practical support and guidance are provided to support parental engagement with the new Relationships and Health objectives. Support includes communication templates and materials explaining the resources used within the programme at each age-level.

Our primary authors are subject experts and teacher trainers who have extensive experience in helping schools implement an effective relationships curriculum that is supported by parents and the school community. The programme includes a set of resources that helps schools engage and inform parents and alleviate their most common worries and concerns.

Direct parental communication

  • A letter tailored to each specific year group, setting out the subject content that will be covered in that year.
  • A brief content overview and outline over the progression for the whole school – across year groups.

Planning material for parental workshops

  • Presentation slides: explaining the aims and purpose of the content and what the curriculum says. Schools will be able to input information linking the programme to the values and ethos of the school.
  • Notes on key points to cover in discussions, including curriculum guidance: e.g. why it is important to use correct names for body parts, how and when periods and puberty are addressed, etc.
  • Model answers to statements and questions that are frequently asked by parents, to help relieve any worries or concerns about the lesson content.
  • Guide for how to introduce the scheme to parents.
  • Strategies to use for engaging parents.

Confidently deliver the new curriculum requirements

Discovery Education Health and Relationships covers the statutory requirements for teaching primary Health Education and Relationships Education from September 2020. It contains lessons for teaching all aspects of the guidelines, including the non-statutory aspects. View the programme progression.
