Harnessing technology to promote British values

Our new professional development course on British values supports spiritual, moral, social and cultural development (SMSC) across the school. Using a wide range of resources from Discovery Education as well as freely available web 2.0 tools, we will explore engaging strategies to cover elements SMSC with a strong focus on the teaching of fundamental British values.

This course will provide tools and strategies to support the understanding and knowledge expectations for pupils under the SMSC requirement, now a key element to Ofsted’s judgement of both quality of education and quality of leadership.

Discovery Education have produced high quality digital media to cover teaching and learning about: democracy, rule of law, separation of power, acceptance of the faiths and beliefs of others and the importance of combatting discrimination. This immersive course will look at how digital technology helps to foster 21st century skills particularly beneficial for SMSC provision.

The requirement to demonstrate SMSC development now forms a key element to Ofsted’s judgement of both quality of education and quality of leadership. This course will provide tools and strategies to support the understanding and knowledge expectations for students under the SMSC umbrella.

Outcomes:

  • An understanding of how integrating digital media can support the development of SMSC
  • Awareness of the range of resources in Discovery Education aligned to the understanding and knowledge expectations for students around fundamental British values
  • Confidence to incorporate a variety of strategies to engage students through the use of digital media
