Literacy and the EAL learner

Exploring the characteristics of an EAL learner through key research and shared experiences, this course will look at the power of digital technologies to engage students through dynamic instruction. Easy to use strategies will enable teachers to incorporate digital media to develop key skills and understanding in all areas of literacy and across the wider curriculum.

Duration options: 3 hours or 6 hours

6 hour course

Goals:

  • To provide a research based context to explore the characteristics of an EAL learner and the vital role of the teacher.
  • To explore the power of using a variety of digital media.
  • To familiarise participants with a range of strategies to easily incorporate digital technologies.
  • To support the integration of Discovery Education Espresso and freely available Web 2.0 tools into medium and short term planning.

Outcomes:

  • Understanding of how practical experience relates to key educational research about EAL learners.
  • Confidence in using a variety of digital media to engage students and positively impact teaching and learning.
  • An awareness of a range of strategies (through practical activities) to easily incorporate digital media.
  • An awareness of the range of resources in Discovery Education Espresso and how to incorporate a selection of recommended freely available Web 2.0 tools.
3 hour course

Goals:

  • To familiarise participants with a range of strategies to easily incorporate digital technologies through the lens of an EAL learner.
  • To look at incorporating Discovery Education Espresso resources and freely available Web 2.0 tools into literacy.

Outcomes:

  • An awareness of a range of strategies (through practical activities) to easily incorporate digital media.
  • An awareness of the range of resources in Discovery Education Espresso and recommended freely available Web 2.0 tools.
