Modern foreign languages: Embedding digital technologies in teaching and learning

Providing a deeper dive into how digital technologies can be used to transform teaching and learning of modern foreign languages, focusing on French. Teachers will explore strategies utilising digital media to develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills of a modern foreign language. Examples will feature Discovery Education Espresso but will also include free web resources. There will be opportunities for exploration and reflection, ensuring possibilities for immediate application in every classroom.

Duration options: 3 hours or 6 hours

6 hour course

Goals:

  • To provide a deeper dive into how digital technologies can be used to transform teaching and learning of modern foreign languages, focusing on French
  • To explore strategies using digital media to develop the speaking, listening, reading and writing skills of a modern foreign language
  • To familiarise participants with Discovery Education Espresso's resources for languages and how to incorporate these with freely available web resources
  • To support the integration of digital media into short and medium term planning in modern foreign languages

Outcomes:

  • An understanding of the support and engagement digital technologies can provide in modern foreign languages
  • An awareness of the variety of way digital technologies can be used and their impact on the teaching and learning of modern foreign languages
  • An awareness of the range of resources in Discovery Education Espresso and how they can be used to meet the requirements of the curriculum
  • Confidence to incorporate digital media into short and medium term planning of modern foreign languages

Whole staff; Key stage grouping; phase grouping; year grouping; NQTs; middle management; Teaching assistants/support staff

3 hour course

Goals:

  • To look at how using different strategies with digital media can support the skills needed to become proficient linguists
  • To familiarise participants with Discovery Education Espresso's language resources and how to incorporate these with a freely available web 2.0 tool

Outcomes:

  • An understanding of the impact a different strategy with digital media can have on developing students language skills
  • An awareness of the range of resources in Discovery Education Espresso and how these can be used to meet the requirements of the modern foreign languages curriculum
