Science: Embedding digital technologies in teaching and learning

Providing a deeper dive into how digital technologies can be used to transform teaching and learning of science. Teachers will explore resources, tools and proven pedagogies that leverage digital media and technology to help students develop scientific thinking through an analytical & problem solving approach. Examples will feature Discovery Education Espresso along with freely available web resources. There will be opportunities for exploration and reflection, ensuring possibilities for immediate application in every classroom.

Duration options: 3 hours or 6 hours

6 hour course

Goals:

  • To provide a deeper dive into how digital technologies can be used to transform teaching and learning of science
  • To explore resources, tools and proven pedagogies that leverage digital media and technology to help students develop scientific thinking
  • To familiarise participants with Discovery Education Espresso's resources for science and how to incorporate these with freely available web 2.0 tools
  • To support the integration of digital media into short and medium term planning of science

Outcomes:

  • An understanding of the support and engagement digital technologies can provide in all areas of science
  • An awareness of the variety of ways digital technologies can be used and their impact on the teaching and learning of science
  • An awareness of the range of resources in Discovery Education Espresso and how they can be used to meet the requirements of the science curriculum
  • Confidence to incorporate digital media into short and medium term planning in science

Whole staff; Key stage grouping; phase grouping; year grouping; NQTs; middle management; Teaching assistants/support staff

3 hour course

  • To look at how using different strategies with digital media can support the skills needed to become skilled scientific thinkers
  • To familiarise participants with Discovery Education Espresso's science resources and how to incorporate these with a freely available web 2.0 tool

  • An understanding of the impact a different strategy with digital media can have on developing students scientific skills
  • An awareness of the range of resources in Discovery Education Espresso and how these can be used to meet the requirements of the science curriculum
