English: Embedding digital technologies in teaching and learning

Providing a deeper dive into how digital technologies can be used to transform teaching and learning of English. Teachers will explore strategies for using digital media to help students become skilled readers, writers and thinkers. Examples will feature Discovery Education Espresso along with freely available web resources. There will be opportunities for exploration and reflection, ensuring possibilities for immediate application in every classroom.

Duration options: 3 hours or 6 hours

6 hour course

Goals:

  • To provide a deeper dive into how digital technologies can be used to transform teaching and learning of English
  • To explore strategies for using digital media to help students become skilled readers, writers and thinkers
  • To familiarise participants with Discovery Education Espresso's resources for English and how to incorporate these with a variety freely available web 2.0 tools
  • To support the integration of digital media into medium and short term planning of English

Outcomes:

  • Understanding (through experience) of the support and engagement digital technologies can provide in all areas of literacy
  • An awareness of the range of resources in Discovery Education Espresso and how these can be used to meet the requirements of the English curriculum
  • An awareness of the variety of ways digital technologies can be used and their impact in transforming teaching and learning of English
  • Confidence to incorporate digital media into short and medium term plans in English

Whole staff; Key stage grouping; phase grouping; year grouping; NQTs; middle management; Teaching assistants/support staff

3 hour course

  • To familiarise participants with Discovery Education Espresso's English resources and how to incorporate these with a freely available web 2.0 tool

  • An understanding of the impact a different strategy with digital media can have on developing students literacy skills
  • An awareness of the range of resources in Discovery Education Espresso and how these can be used to meet the requirements of the English curriculum
