There are thousands of resources within Discovery Education Espresso, so to help you see what's popular, we've compiled the Top 10 modules used by UK primary school teachers over the last few months.

Take a look — whatever your subject, you are sure to find essential materials.

What's a module? A module is a collection of resources covering a particular topic — which include videos, texts, activities, images, printable worksheets and more. Most of our modules also include a handy module guide which outlines: the module content, curriculum coverage, resource descriptions and application & extension activities.

1 Foundation Stage

Phonics

Resources: Videos (32) Activities (65)

Our award nominated phonics module containing 105 videos and over 230 activities, is designed to complement any existing core synthetic phonic programme.

Espresso phonics is a systematic sequence of synthetic phonics teaching that uses structured videos and activities to complement any core synthetic phonic programme.

Presenters Cat and Radzi teach pupils each phoneme/grapheme correspondence and the skills of blending and segmenting. There is also a video featuring a selection of tricky words in each phase, and a printable certificate to celebrate the completion of each module.

The videos are designed to be a supplementary resource and are ideal as both introduction and reinforcement.

The associated activities allow children plenty of opportunities to practise the skills of blending and segmenting letter sounds in a variety of words, including high-frequency words (now referenced as common exception words), which also helps with learning to read and spell tricky words. The final activities provide practise in reading appropriate words in context. They can be used by the whole class, small groups and individuals.

The six modules are based on the Department for Education’s ‘Letters and Sounds’ programme. Scrap’s phonics covers Phases Two and Three, Polly’s phonics is based upon Phase Three and Kim’s phonics covers Phase Four. Phase Five has been split into three modules: Ash’s phonics looks at new graphemes, Scully’s phonics is based upon alternative pronunciations and Sal’s phonics covers alternative spellings.

Addition and subtraction

Resources: Videos (26) Activities (21) Factfiles (1) Printable resources (15)

Videos and songs introduce a range of strategies for solving addition and subtraction problems. Activities and printable resources provide chances to practise and apply this learning using a range of visual representations.

This module has been designed to support the development of addition and subtraction skills throughout Key Stage 1, from learning number bonds by heart and introducing number sentences with mathematical symbols, to applying mental strategies to add and subtract two-digit numbers.

Through videos, activities and printable resources, children are introduced to useful concepts and methods that will help them apply their knowledge to find the answers to calculations involving larger and trickier numbers. They learn to recognise addition and subtraction as related operations, to look for ways of partitioning or reordering numbers in order to make calculations easier, to bridge through multiples of 10, and to round and compensate in order to arrive at the correct answer. These mental strategies are illustrated using pictorial representations including number lines. Each key skill is also reinforced through a song.

Recognising unit fractions and understanding that these represent equal parts of objects, shapes and quantities

Through videos, activities and printable resources, children will begin to recognise unit fractions and understand that these represent equal parts of objects, shapes and quantities. They connect halves and quarters to equal sharing and grouping of sets and objects, and solve problems involving fractions of numbers and measures. They learn to combine halves and quarters as parts of a whole and begin to understand simple equivalences.

This module has been designed to support the development of the curriculum objectives covered under the topic of Fractions at Key Stage 1.

They are given opportunities to relate shapes to everyday objects and to describe, compare, draw and sort shapes, learning the related vocabulary to enable them to do this. Children also learn to describe position, direction and movement and are given opportunities to apply this in practical contexts, and to identify and explore patterns and sequences that can be made by shapes.
